The Joy of Travel

By Kalina Davis

Despite the forecast that had promised clouds and rain, the sun was shining and the sky was blue. It was the perfect day. I leaned against the side of the boat and closed my eyes, letting the wind blow through my hair. There I was on a private boat tour in Capri with some of my best friends, gliding through the sapphire sea along Italy’s breathtaking coastline. Was this real life? Did it get any better than this?

I looked around at my travel companions sitting in the boat with me. Every one of them reflected my expression, a huge smile plastered on each of their faces.

“Woohoo!” my friend, Ben, exclaimed over and over again as the boat took us around the island.

“This is the best day of my life!” my roommate, Alli, said gleefully. “I’m telling you, this is the peak of my life right here!”

“This boat tour was worth every penny!” my other roommate, Taylor, said as the wind whipped her hair around her face.

I smiled at the joy I saw on every face there. It seemed like there was something in the air that was making us all laugh and smile like fools. I’m pretty sure our boat driver thought we were crazy, but he smiled at us anyway, letting us enjoy our experience in paradise.Italy travel planning Capri

The driver took us around the island, pointing out the different grottos and other beautiful pieces of landscape. He stopped the boat halfway through our tour so we could have a chance to swim in the water. I had never seen water so blue before. It was entirely enchanting. We all took turns jumping off the boat and into the water below. Everyone took pictures and videos, attempting to capture part of the beauty we were experiencing in those moments. I floated in the water on my back, soaking in the sun and the experience. This was truly the happiest I had felt in a long time. Surrounded by blue water, blue sky, and magnificent cliffs and rock formations, with the charming island of Capri off in the distance, I felt like I was in a scene from a movie.Italy travel planning Capri

On the way back to the island, my friends and I were even louder than before, laughing and singing, energized by the exhilaration of the experience. It had been an afternoon filled with joy and wonder. I don’t think I stopped smiling during that entire day.

Traveling and exploring the world can bring up so many different emotions. Excitement, fear, wonder, sadness. But one of my favorite emotions that traveling can help bring out is joy. The joy you have when you can’t wipe that smile off your face. The joy that gives you the best memories. The joy that allows you to briefly forget about your troubles. Something about traveling and experiencing new things can have the ability to bring out the best in you and those around you, and produce a joy that is contagious.

Traveling presents so many opportunities to see and experience the wonderful places this world has to offer. Choosing to take these opportunities will provide you with experiences and memories you will never forget. These experiences will often bring out genuine joy in you and those around you. When your cheeks are sore from smiling at the end of the day, you know you’ve succeeded.travel italy planning
