I have decided to take International Women’s Day a step further and celebrate the amazing women who have come in and out of my life all month. These talented and driven ladies have all given me encouragement as I reach for my goals, and I want to honor them and hopefully through their stories touch other women and girls who are trying to follow their own dreams. I present today’s Women of Inspiration featuring Ira Green.
This lady and I go way back. WAAAAY BACK. Like practicing dance routines to Bananarama. Life took us our separate ways, but I was completely un-surprised to hear how successful she has been. I want to highlight Ira and her recent accomplishment as she powers through to bring healthy change to women with her line of all natural deodorant products Freedom Stick.
She hates to write, so I have been given permission to embellish, but the dance routines are a true story.
Describe who you are and what you do.
Ira Kaganovsky Green – Owner and founder of Freedom deodorant.
When did you decide to pursue your dream? Was there a specific moment or event?
When I made my first batch of natural deodorant. I had decided to go natural when 3 of my friends were diagnosed with breast cancer and their doctors recommended not using antiperspirant. Everything I bought on the market was horrible and a friend showed me how she made her own natural deodorant… I literately had an aha moment on my first batch. I could see how I could make it better and was excited about it. When I created my first mint scent I worked all day, 20 batches of different levels of oils to get the scent just right…..i had turned into a mad scientist. …..but I loved it. I knew right then my life would change.
What has been the scariest or most difficult part of your journey, and what did you/are you doing to overcome?
Everything and nothing. I had just gone through a divorce when I started making the deodorant. My ex (wonderful father, lousy husband) lost his job, a year later when I decided to sell my financial firm business that I had run for over 10 years and pursue the deodorant company full time. No child support (every little bit helps when starting a company). So I had no income at all……..scary yes, but boy does it put a fire under you. I didn’t throw a pity party… I just reeled in the belt and started making sales. No one can rescue you but you!
I also didn’t sell the firm until I saw a nice momentum for the deodorant company. I worked both jobs for a while until I saw the other take speed (I was pretty tired). I think a lot of people tend to jump too early. I am the sole bread winner for my family and I had to play it smart. Working hard is one thing… but to truly be successful working smart is key.
What is the best part about what you are doing?
Everything, giving back, paying forward and creating something from scratch.
If you could tell all the young women out there questioning themselves one thing, what would it be?
Breathe and open your darn eyes!!! Opportunity is everywhere. We are too scared to see it. Also, you can follow your passion but make some money doing it too…want to be a writer…go work for a publishing house or intern with a marketing company. You love makeup? Go apply with the companies and move up the ranks…….I know someone who loves to travel……….look what she is doing now! Aww…
I’m writing because you obviously inspire me, who has inspired you?
Laurie ann Levin, Estée lauder, Barbara Walters, Golda Meyer and my grandmother Eliza….oh that would be a fun dinner party!
I want in!
Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.
