As, mentioned in my previous article, I have decided to take International Women’s Day a step further and celebrating the amazing women who have come in and out of my life. These talented and driven ladies have all given me encouragement as I reach for my goals, and I want to honor them and hopefully through their stories touch other women and girls who are trying to follow their own dreams. I present today’s Women of Inspiration series featuring Tamara Young of Consign Couture.
Technically, Consign Couture is a design consignment shop in Portland but take one step in the store or one look at her website and you can feel that it is so much more. Tamara’s philosophy is the repurposing is always in fashion, and her shop was built with the same commitment. A movable wall from an art gallery is now a dressing room, flooring was acquired through a local recycling center, the fixtures and clothing racks have been given a second life from previous stores. She also does the same with women everyday, taking what they already are and showing them how to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. That is a powerful gift.
I obsessively cyber-stalk Tamara, she has an incredible IG account (go follow her immediately) that not only features gorgeous pieces from her shop, but also inspires me with her creativity and the underlying girl power images. She seems to be constantly reinventing herself.
Please describe who you are and what you do.
I’m Tamara and I own a designer consignment shop in Portland Oregon. I am also an editorial and personal stylist and a speaker. I also just started a shopping tour company in Portland!
When did you decide to pursue your dream? Was there a specific moment or event?
Yes. One moment. I was at lunch with my mom. Told her I could not keep managing people that were being given unattainable sales goals and I wanted to quit. She said, open a consignment shop. I already owned a perfect building. Then the rest is history 6 years later.
What has been the scariest or most difficult part of your journey, and what did you/are you doing to overcome?
Trusting the wrong people. Not having checks in balances in place. I now know fully believe you need a bookkeeper, CPA and an attorney if you are in business.
What is the best part about what you are doing?
I help empower women everyday by making them feel more confident.
If you could tell all the young women out there questioning themselves one thing, what would it be?
Listen to your gut and only surround yourself with others who lift you up. Do not talk negative about other women. Walk away from it. Or call other women out when you see it happen. The movement for equality for other women starts with us lifting each other up.
Amen to that, sister!
I’m writing because you obviously inspire me, who has inspired you?
My mom who has become by biggest role model.
Tamara, thank you for not giving up on your dream. I can’t imagine how impossible that must have felt at times. Thank you for making us feel amazing with the all the curves and beautiful flaws so many of us let hold us back. I can’t wait to watch what your future holds.
Not in Portland, don’t worry! You can shop till you drop on-line.
